Usulutan The toponym in Nahuat language Usulutan means "Between the Ocelots"; where: Uselut, means: Ocelot and Tan, which means between. Etymologically giving the Nahuat result: Uselutan. was originally inhabited by Lenca groups. Towards the XV century, however, they were conquered by Pipils. During the time of the conquest, the residents repelled the Spanish militias for a month in 1529, who were under the command of Diego de Rojas. Also, in 1539 they harassed an outpost of Pedro de Alvarado in the area of the current Bay of Jiquilisco. It was not until 1553 that Diego de Holguín achieved the pacification of the site.
