Tepic is a Mexican city, capital of the state of Nayarit and head of the municipality of the same name. According to the 2020 Population and Housing Census, it is the most populated city in the state with 371,387 inhabitants in its urban area. This figure rises to 419,557 inhabitants if the urban area of the neighboring municipality of Xalisco is taken into account, and to 491,153 in the metropolitan area, that is, the totality of the localities of both municipalities.
It is located a little more than 735 kilometers (457 mi) from the country's capital, Mexico City.
As the capital of the state, Tepic is the seat of the three powers of the entity, and concentrates the headquarters of the municipal council, currently the XLII Constitutional City Council of Tepic, the body in charge of governing and administering the resources of the entire municipality and its headquarters, the city.
It was founded in 1531 by Nuño de Guzmán calling it Villa del Espíritu Santo de la Mayor España, later changing its name to Santiago de Compostela, being recognized as the capital of the province of Nueva Galicia within the territory of New Spain.
