Tagetes erectacommonly called cempasúchil, cempasúchitl, sempasúchil, zempasúchil, cempoalxóchitl, cempaxóchitl, cempoal or zempoal (from Nahuatl: cempôhualxôchitl 'twenty flowers'), and known in Spain as tagete, is a species of the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico, where it is present in the wild mainly in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, Jalisco, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo; in these last three states the flower is known as x'pujuk (in Mayan; pronounced as ʃpuhuk). It is also found in Central American countries. Despite its Mesoamerican origin, in English it is known as African marigold or French marigold.
